the Latin root in words in the english language that means speech, or talking, as it comes from the latin verb dictare, which means to say, or to speak, and the latin verb dicere, which means the same thing.
the latin root 'dict' is where we get words such as:

diction - (n) speech, someone's ability to speak

predict - literally 'to say beforehand'

etc.
